Mobapad's M12-HD Switch 2 Controllers: A Comfortable Upgrade
The Nintendo Switch 2, while an improvement on its predecessor, still struggles with the dinky Joy-Con controllers. These small pads can cause pain in the hands and wrists, especially during long gaming sessions. Third-party alternatives, like the NYXI Hyperion 3, are emerging, but I've been testing Mobapad's M12-HD to see if it can replace Nintendo's official offering.
And, spoiler alert, it's really good.
The M12-HD offers a more traditional Pro Controller-like design with a curved rear side, providing a comfortable grip and eliminating the pain associated with the Joy-Con 2. Attaching and removing the M12-HD from the Switch 2 is seamless, thanks to its magnet design. The controllers stay firmly in place, and you need a good yank to remove them, similar to the official pads.
One of the M12-HD's standout features is its glide technology in the analogue sticks, a feature pioneered by Nintendo's Pro Controller 2. This technology uses a silicone ring to prevent grinding and ensures a smooth experience. Additionally, TMR technology theoretically prevents stick drift, keeps power consumption low, and maintains high accuracy.
The inputs on the M12-HD are clicky microswitches, which might be a subject of personal preference. However, they provide tactile feedback and are satisfying to use, enhancing accuracy in fast-paced games.
The M12-HD also offers two distinct d-pad options and two programmable buttons, allowing for customization to suit individual gaming preferences. It even includes NFC functionality for amiibo compatibility, although it's only active in Bluetooth power-saving mode.
One notable omission is mouse support, which would have made the M12-HD a perfect replacement. However, the controllers are still a significant improvement over the Joy-Con 2, especially in terms of comfort and analog stick quality.
The M12-HD's material feels smooth and textured, ensuring a solid grip. However, it does attract finger oils, leading to smudges, which could be improved with more color options.
In conclusion, the Mobapad M12-HD controllers are a clear step above Nintendo's official Joy-Con 2, offering improved comfort, analog stick quality, and customization options. While there are a few minor quirks, they are a no-brainer for handheld gaming enthusiasts seeking a more ergonomic experience.
